How many broken wires in one 'lay' require a wire rope to be scrapped?
Six or more randomly distributed broken wires in one lay, or three or more broken wires in one strand in one lay require immediate wire rope replacement.
Wire rope discard criteria are strictly defined to prevent catastrophic failures. When six or more randomly distributed broken wires appear within one lay length (the distance it takes for one strand to make a complete wrap around the rope core), the rope must be removed from service immediately. Additionally, if three or more broken wires are found in one strand within one lay length, replacement is mandatory regardless of total wire count.
