How do you measure sheave groove wear using a gauge?

MAIN-402 · Maintenance
Use a wire rope groove gauge to measure groove depth and width. Compare measurements to manufacturer specifications and replace sheaves when wear exceeds 10% of original rope diameter.
Position the wire rope groove gauge perpendicular to the sheave groove and measure both the groove depth and throat opening width. Record measurements at multiple points around the sheave circumference, as wear patterns are often uneven. The gauge should fit snugly in the groove without excessive play.
Reference: ASME B30.5 Mobile and Locomotive Cranes standard
Remember: "Gauge-Measure-Compare-10%" - Use groove gauge, measure depth/width, compare to specs, replace at 10% wear.
